SUMMARY:Rachael Lee exhibition
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of Rachael Lee’s current paintings, in which figures, rooms and remembered fragments move between intimacy and ambiguity.\nThe works grow through revision and discovery. Bodies emerge, dissolve and return; interiors become emotional and psychological spaces rather than fixed scenes.\nTogether, the paintings create an exhibition that is quiet, intimate and open to interpretation\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nRachael Lee\n\nRachael Lee is a figurative painter with around thirty years of painting, art study and creative practice, most recently completing postgraduate study in MA Painting at Arts University Bournemouth. Her psychologically charged paintings move between autobiography and fiction, drawing upon memory, domestic interiors, relationships, humour and the absurd.\nAlongside her studio practice, Rachael has substantial experience as an artist, workshop facilitator and teacher. She has taught painting to offenders and led inclusive creative workshops for people with a wide range of experiences and needs. Her approach is adaptive and non-judgemental without lowering artistic expectations.\nRachael loves making connections and helping other people connect with one another. Warmth, kindness and openness sit alongside a serious commitment to painting, shaping both how she makes and how she invites people into the life around the work.\nSANDY HILL\nSandy Hill first encountered Rachael through the paintings for which she received a joint runner-up prize as part of their Open Call Tony Viney Award show. This exhibition is an opportunity to reveal the fuller practice: the experienced figurative painter, the adaptive maker, the facilitator and connector, and The Painter’s Couch project that brings these parts of her life together.\n\nThe Painter’s Couch\nThe Painter’s Couch emerged directly from the way Rachael makes. Because illness and physical limitations affect how and where she can work, she often paints from the couch. It is a practical adaptation, but it has also become an intimate creative centre: a place for sustained looking, making, thinking and resting when needed, as well as the place from which she can welcome people, have conversations and make connections.\n\n\n\nLIVE RESIDENCY\nIn Room 14, Rachael can make from the couch with a small, contained selection of materials, allowing visitors to meet the practice without turning the gallery into a conventional studio.\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n
