Music and Performance @ Sandy Hill Arts

Music and Performance at Sandy Hill

The Sandy Hill Arts site has been hosting music since 2017 – some of it thanks to the Boilerhouse Gallery artist cooperative which has animated Sandy Hill for over twenty years.

One of the biggest changes we bring to Sandy Hill is a more structured programme of live music and other performance, both free and ticketed.

We want to strengthen community engagement and access to music in Purbeck. Sandy Hill Arts is a unique venue and a potential hub for a rich programme of musical events and workshops.  We wish to showcase quality and  experimental music from elsewhere, but also support rising local talent.

You can see our current programme here – these are confirmed acts, there will be others in development….

#Sandyhillsaturdays and other spaces

Like many in Purbeck we are an outdoor venue – although we have a big marquee, sympathetic to our green oasis under the Purbeck hills, on our shopping list🙂.  As well as our main performance space which can comfortably seat over 150 (at the moment bring your own seats!) we have a number of  more intimate ‘stages’  around the site, including our Room 14 indoor exhibition space which can seat 40.
One such space, opposite the Corfe Castle train station, hosts our #sandyhillsaturdays – a chance to enjoy a free performance on a Saturday afternoon, with something to eat from our on site caterer, before visiting the Boilerhouse Gallery, an exhibition or one of the open studios. It’s a great space for new acts to get some experience of playing in public.

We love a good news story….

Local student musician Finlay, who played on site when the Fantasy Orchestra included us in their bicycle tour, has been accepted to join the National Youth Concert Band playing his beloved bass trombone.

We were more than happy for Fin to film an online audition in Room 14, our exhibition, class room, and occasional  rehearsal and performance space.

Fin is now looking forward to a week of rehearsals culminating in a concert at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire including Symphony No. 1  “The Lord of the Rings” by Johan de Meij.  https://www.nycb.co.uk/

Fin’s mum says, “Many thanks to Sandy Hill Arts for creating these opportunities to play with other musicians, wonderful memories for musicians and parents!”

Room 14 is often available as an affordable rehearsal space, and we hope to have a second classroom/rehearsal space available later in the year.

If you are a local musician or small band looking for somewhere to rehearse please get in touch…

Previous Performers @ Sandy Hill Arts

We’ve put together a quick list of everyone who has played for us over the past few years – apologies to anyone we’ve missed. We are keen to support new local acts as well as bring in interesting performers from further afield. If that’s you, do get in touch…
