MUSIC GIG: Top musicians improvise together at Sandy Hill Arts!

Tickets on web and door

An evening of improvised music that will be unusual, creative and magical. A wonderful opportunity to hear talented musicians improvise and to experience something unique and memorable.

Featured artists : Pili Lopez ( vocals), Rob Mills ( sax), Rick Foot ( double bass ), Rob Palmer ( guitar ) and Véronique Joly ( vocals).

Pili Lopez says she started singing before being born from her mum’s womb, that’s  what it feels like to her!

She grew up in the rich community singing society of Galicia in northwest Spain and after a short stint as Chouteira’s folk band singer and accordion player starting leading community choirs in 1994. She has hardly ever stopped doing so from south Spain to Derbyshire, back to Galicia and now in Dorset. She especially enjoys singing folk songs from around the world with non familiar (to a Western ear) harmonies and learning different techniques through them, from Indian classical note bending to Eastern European open throat and Western African energising style using the whole body.
Guitarist Rob Palmer (of Sound Cellar)  has worked in many improvised music settings over the years recording and performing with such musicians as pianist John Law, saxophonists Theo Travis and Jon Lloyd and violinist Phil Wachsmann. Tonight he will be joined by his wife, vocalist Véronique Joly, to create otherworldly soundscapes mixing ambient guitar loops and lush vocal harmonies.
Rob Mills ( saxophonist) is a musician and composer who has performed and toured internationally, now resident in Purbeck.  Rob often plays with The Trackside Cooptimists – a changing collection of local musicians, and the Swanage Jazz Machine.

Rick Foot is a double bassist and writer of sardonic songs. As a bass player his background is in jazz and abstract improvisation, and much of his current work is with acoustic singer/songwriters, most recently touring with the Ruth Theodore Band and Kirsty McGee. He has recorded and performed with many people across a range of genres, from folk musicians Nancy Kerr and James Fagan to saxophonists Dick Heckstall-Smith and Evan Parker.

As a songwriter he has released an album (Rain Machine) and an EP (Songs of Idiocy & Expedience) of his own work, which he performs solo with voice, bass and loop device. His 39-second miniature A Message to the Future was a finalist in the 2018 International Songwriting Competition.
