Greenwood carving workshop with Tim Graham

You’re out in the woods. A saw and a couple of knives are in your bag and the day is stretching out before you. What can you make with what’s around you?

This short lesson is designed for everyone to experience and enjoy the process of carving freshly cut wood with no big axe work, no chainsaws or heavy lifting.

Over three hours you will make three projects; a tent peg, a butter knife and a simple spoon as well as learning about how to recognise useful timber, how to access and collect it, and safety when using tools.

Tim is a greenwood worker and forest school leader with over a decade’s worth of experience creating functional and beautiful forms as well as teaching and leading educational experiences outdoors.
All tools and timber provided. Workshop will run partly inside and partly outdoors – please dress accordingly.
What to bring: Sensible clothes and footwear are essential, keep in mind that you will be making cuts towards your body and bracing the wood against yourself so a stout shirt, coat or apron is recommended. Safety will be paramount during the session as each knife cut, when executed properly, is designed only to cut the timber. If you would like to bring extra gloves to protect your hands then you are welcome to. I recommend Site work gloves which are available from most DIY shops, for around £1.40 you can get a pair that will add grip while working but won’t be cut resistant or for around £3 you can get a cut resistant pair. Please bring any snacks you need to keep you going, tea and coffee will be available. All tools will be cleaned before and after the session, please bring antibacterial gel for your own use if you wish.
