and the line up on the 8th of August is second to none!

MOMENT’S NOTICE showcases five leading lights in the art of spontaneous composition. Each episode consists of one duo and one trio playing fully-improvised, 40-minute sets. The evening culminates with a combo quintet set. Line-ups are curated by the event creator, George Nelson.

Each episode normally takes place in AMP studios, Old Kent Road, London but for this event FIVE BRILLIANT MUSICIANS and curator GEORGE NELSON will travel down to SANDY HILL ARTS to bring this particularly special event to Purbeck!

THE LINE UP IS …

MOMO is a London-based Brazilian multi-instrumentalist. With eight albums behind him, Momo’s work has gained international acclaim, including 2024’s Gira, named in MOJO’s Top 10 World Music Albums and featured in Songlines’ Top of the World. His 2006 debut, A Estética do Rabisco, is considered a key work in modern Brazilian psychedelia, and he has earnt praise from artists like David Byrne and Patti Smith. Momo’s latest album, Tum Tum Tum features Marcos Valle, Nina Miranda, and Rosie Turton, and beautifully merges MPB, Tropicália, Afrobeat, psychedelia, and jazz.
Suntou Susso is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, singer, and composer from The Gambia. His primary instrument, the kora, symbolises his cultural role as a Griot – preserving history and wisdom through music, poetry, and storytelling. He performs solo or leads a seven-piece band that fuses West African Mandinka traditions with jazz and soul, and has collaborated and performed alongside celebrated musicians like Seckou Keita, Mamudou Susso and Youssou N’Dour.
Rachel Kitchlew is a London-based harpist and composer whose music blends jazz, ambient, and experimental styles, often created through collaborations with drummers, bassists, and producers. Her debut studio album, Flirty Ghost, was one of last year’s hidden gems from London’s vibrant jazz scene. She has performed on BBC Radio 3, Jazz FM, and Worldwide FM, and appeared at major events and venues such as Glastonbury, the Royal Albert Hall, Montreux, and We Out Here. Her collaborations include work with artists like Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Robohands, Vegyn, and François Kevorkian.
 
Maddy Coombs has been steadily establishing herself as a major tenor saxophonist in London, performing regularly with bands such as the New Regency Orchestra and Nu Civilisation Orchestra. Her own band brings together some of London’s finest young talent, including Jordan Hadfield, Finn Carter, and Menelik Claffey. Maddy had previously been mentored by Tomorrow’s Warriors heavyweights like Binker Golding, Denys Baptiste, and Gary Crosby, and has shared the stage with acclaimed artists such as Judi Jackson, Soweto Kinch and Mark Kavuma.
Matthew Holmes: Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Graduate, drummer Matthew Holmes is a huge talent making serious noises on the UK jazz scene, playing alongside legends like Hermeto Pascoal, Brian Jackson, Soweto Kinch, Alina Bzhezhinska, Myra Brownbridge and Tony Kofi. Matthew has chops for days but can also be incredibly textural and intricate. The complete drummer.

GEORGE NELSON is the founder and curator of the Parliamentary award-winning, first-meeting live improv event, Moment’s Notice. The event has featured the likes of Saul Williams, Kae Tempest, Ben Lamar Gay, Shabaka Hutchings, Norma Winstone, Matana Roberts, Moses Boyd, Angel Bat Dawid, Femi Koleoso, Courtney Pine, ESKA, Soweto Kinch and Momoko Gill. He launched sister music event, A Handful of Fives in 2025, one year after setting up record label, Red Dust.

George’s critically lauded photobook, Scenes (2020) (“A beautifully presented photo essay on the alternative jazz scene in London” Will Self, THE NEW EUROPEAN) gazes upon London’s jazz scene during a period of increasing contrast and diversity, building upon his first major work, Come Sunday (2013), which centred around the capital’s Italian immigrant community and their singular relationship with football. George’s pictures adorn album covers from artists ranging from Alice Zawadzki, Shifa (Rachel Musson, Pat Thomas & Mark Sanders), Neil Charles to OHS (David Okumu, Tom Herbert & Tom Skinner). He has been guest selecter on BBC Sounds, NTS and Soho Radio among others.
