Planet Purbeck – Sunday 18th September
Our second day for 2022’s Planet Purbeck Arts and Environment Festival is an afternoon of free live music, leading up to a return of Project:Project – Rob Mills and Sharon James’ live improvisation of music and painting.
The Sprout & Bean pop up cafe and our bar will still be running, helping make this into a splendid Sunday afternoon and evening – think of it as an extension of our usual #sandyhillsaturdays. Timings are approximate for now 🙂
This is free – no need to book!
We kick off the afternoon with two new bands….
2pm – Over The Hill
This three-piece combo consists of Richard on bass, Phil on lap steel and tenor guitar and Owen on ukulele, and 6- and 12-string guitar; they share vocals. All three have a background in teaching and a passion for music and the correct use of the apostrophe. Old enough to know better, the guys went ahead anyway and formed the group earlier this year and September’s performance at Sandy Hill Arts will be their debut or, as they like to think of it, their World Premiere. Their repertoire includes the music of Richard Thompson, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, John Hiatt, Nick Lowe and the usual suspects that you’d expect given their age and dress sense. Their mission is to have fun, make music and get out of the house, which they do on a regular basis.
3pm – Gravy Train
Gravy Train are a newly formed four piece, with classic line up of two guitars bass and drums. Tapping into influences ranging from Television, Kinks and Bowie, the songs are mostly originals peppered with a few 70’s covers. Time to get on the Gravy Train!
4pm – Buzz
We loved Buzz’s #sandyhillsaturday set in July so have asked him back in a more formal setting.
Relatively new to Purbeck, Buzz is taking advantage of his fresh start to make a more serious and concerted approach to songwriting and performing – first at local open mic slots then at our #sandyhillsaturdays. Buzz plays his own material – think contemplative, melodic pop folk – as well as some covers.
5pm – Open Mic Session
Details to follow – but we would love to use this weekend to start a more regular Open Mic Session – we had some great voices last September. Email us – info@sandyhillarts.co.uk – if you would like to perform. We can probably rustle up a microphone and a small amp – anything grander than that please let us know well in advance.
We might squeeze another act in too 🙂
8.30pm – PROJECT : PROJECT
Our main evening performance, and a rare public performance for this ongoing, exciting collaboration. Live art and music from Sharon James and Rob Mills. Cinema quality projection of Sharon’s digital painting, screened in real time, interacting with Rob’s improvised soundscapes using non traditional instruments as well as some more recognisable ones. A unique and colourful outdoor experience.
Sharon James is a nationally collected artist whose work has recently been shown in Black Lives Matter UK , Awaiting Voices, Expressions of Freedom (for BlackWomenArtists), Elements (for the Arts Council) and has recently appeared on Grayson Perry’s Art Club on national TV.
Rob Mills is a musician and composer who has performed and toured internationally, now resident in Purbeck.
We are indebted to Peter Handy and the Purbeck Film Festival for their expertise and equipment – and it’s great that Purbeck arts organisations can collaborate at events like this 🙂
9.30 – 22.30 DJ set from Paul Angel
Expect eclectic afrobeats, acid jazz, exotica, vinyl rarities from around the world and occasionally something you know – decades of crate digging distilled into a single set.
