Drop-In Bonfire Ceramics demonstration with John Winterbottom – PAWF
Join experimental archaeologist John Winterbottom and Diana Hall for a free, live demonstration on how to turn clay into ceramic using a ‘bonfire’ kiln. This process is the oldest method of turning clay into ceramic – a practice that is still used widely today.
Please note that it will be held outside and weather dependent. This demonstration will last a few hours – you’re welcome to drop in for part of it or stay for the whole time. We hope to run a proper technique workshop later in the year.
About John Winterbottom and Diana Hall
John and Diana are two experimental archaeologists interested in watching wet, pliable, mud/clay turn into ceramic when fired to about 800* in a bonfire kiln.
They have both worked at Singleton Open Air Museum, Chichester – Winchester Cathedral – Bestwell, Wareham, Dorset, Corfe Castle and many other places. They also demonstrate medieval inlaid tile production and conduct hands-on small tile workshops.
