High-quality public performances by The Youthsayers are attended by people across generations. The Youthsayers quality output is reflected in their invitation to play at iconic venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, in the Youth Music Proms, We Out Here Festival, WOMAD, Jubilation festival, and the London Jazz Festival, where they regularly perform at the Clore gallery in The Royal Festival Hall.
THE YOUTHSAYERS is the brain-child of saxophonist Idris Rahman and trumpeter Robin Hopcraft of The Soothsayers. They are a South London based music performance and education group working with talented young people to develop group playing skills through ensemble work and live performance. ROBIN and IDRIS act as creative mentors bringing their depth of knowledge, commitment and experience from decades of playing and making music. (Their own band, THE SOOTHSAYERS, created a sound that is both timeless and forward-thinking.) Through their links to the music world, The Youthsayers get to work with other professional musicians including Dele Sosimi, (who worked with Fela Kuti) and The Top Cats.
THE YOUTHSAYERS brings together hard to reach young people – beginners and more experienced musicians – and offers them the highest level of musicianship in Afrobeat, Reggae and Jazz music. Their programme includes weekly sessions where young musicians learn new music, explore improvisation and develop performance skills. The Youthsayers have shared their youth workshop programme with 100s of young people nationwide. The results are wonderful – afrobeat/ska/jazz with a energetic young edge to it. For this special performance at Sandy Hill Arts we will be presenting a combined band featuring current and former YOUTHSAYERS members as well as FOUR of the THE SOOTHSAYERS including band leaders Idris and Robin.
Expect energy, dynamics and a big afrobeat sound tinged with jazz and dub augmentations.
